What is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT)?

A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is a registered healthcare professional who has completed the necessary requirements to practice in BC as and RMT under the CCHPBC.
RMTs undergo extensive training, including graduating from an accredited massage therapy program and successfully passing the CMTBC Registration Examination. Registration with the CMTBC ensures that RMTs are qualified to provide safe and effective evidence-based care. The college plays a vital role in protecting the public by ensuring only competent and properly trained professionals are licensed to practice massage therapy in BC.
At Aktiv Coast Healthcare all of our therapists are registered with the college.

What is Massage Therapy Treatment?

Registered Massage Therapy treatment involves the skillful application of pressure and tension on muscles, tendons, and ligaments to restore muscle balance, reduce tension, and promote healing. It is effective for a wide range of soft tissue injuries including:

  • Sports injuries (eg. plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries)
  • Chronic pain (e.g., back, neck, shoulder).
  • Postural Syndromes
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Headaches and migraines.

Benefits of Massage Therapy:

Almost anyone can benefit from massage therapy. Here are a few of the notable benefits:

  • Relieves pain, inflammation, and muscle tension: Improves quality of life while reducing reliance on pain medications (1, 2) .
  • Improves mobility and posture for improvements in energy, health and well-being (3, 4).
  • Accelerates circulation and healing for enhanced recovery and athletic performance (1, 2, 3).
  • Reduces stress and promotes relaxation for better quality sleep (3).
  • Lessens or eliminates pain and stiffness associated with chronic and acute conditions such as sprains, strains, posture syndromes, and sports injuries (1, 4).

Techniques We Use

Our Registered Massage Therapists use evidence-based methods based on your goals, stage of healing, and injury type. They may use some or all of the following techniques:

Deep Tissue Massage: Firm, slow, sustained pressure targets deeper muscle layers and connective tissue to relieve chronic tension, reduce adhesions (knots), and improve circulation.

Trigger Point Therapy: Focused, sustained pressure is applied to trigger points—sensitive muscle areas that may cause referred pain. This helps relieve tightness, localized pain, and referred pain patterns.

Swedish Massage: Long, flowing contact with light to medium pressure improves blood flow, promotes relaxation, and alleviates stress.

Sports Massage: Combines techniques such as stretching, compression, contract-relax, and deep tissue work. This enhances flexibility, prevents injuries, and reduces post-exercise muscle soreness.

Prenatal Massage: Gentle, supportive techniques and positioning adjustments ensure safety and comfort for both mother and baby. It promotes relaxation and alleviates lower back and pelvic pain during pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it’s a safe, natural treatment. The most common side effect, similar to working out, is mild muscle soreness. We recommend applying heat, gentle stretching, and light cardio, such as walking for 45-60 minutes daily, to reduce soreness.

Your RMT will conduct a confidential health history review and physical assessment to understand your needs and goals. They will develop a treatment plan, explain the expected outcomes, and discuss alternative options. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions before treatment begins. Adjustments to the plan can be made at any time with your feedback. Treatment is performed after receiving your informed consent.

Frequency depends on your condition and goals. Your RMT will provide a personalized recommendation during your appointment.

Your RMT considers factors such as the type and stage of your condition, your treatment goals, and how you’ve responded to previous therapies. Techniques may reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, or address lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling. The selected approach is to ensure your treatment is customized, safe and effective.

To become licensed to practice in BC, RMTs must meet rigorous standards set by the College of Complimentary Health Professionals of British Columbia (CCHPBC), including:

  • Accredited Education: Completing a diploma program in massage therapy including 2,200–3,000 hours of training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, and advanced manual therapy techniques.
  • Clinical Practicum: Gaining supervised, hands-on experience treating real patients with diverse conditions.
  • Licensing Examination: Passing the CCHPBC Registration Exam, which evaluates theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and professionalism.

To maintain good standing, RMTs must also complete ongoing professional development to stay current with evidence-based practices.
